April is Heartworm Awareness Month

Heartworm disease is a horrible disease that consists of foot-long worms that live in the pulmonary arteries and hearts or infected dogs and cats. This diease is 100% preventable using serval different and highly safe products that can be conveniently administered to dogs and cats on a regular basis. Some of these products also provide a spectra of activity against other harmful internal parasites so there is an added advantage of protecting against these pathogens when used on a routine basis.

Xylitol Poisoning

Xylitol is used as a sweetener in many products, including gum, candy, baked goods and toothpaste. It can cause insulin release in most species, which can lead to liver failure. The increase in insulin leads to hypoglycemia (lowered sugar levels). Initial signs of toxicosis include vomiting, lethargy and loss of coordination. Signs can progress to recumbancy and seizures. Elevated liver enzymes and liver failure can be seen within a few days.
