Welcome to Anacapa Animal Hospital
Identifying Pain in your Pet
As the weather cools this winter, we rely on you to note subtle changes in your pet's behavior that may signal pain. Changes in attitude, activity levels, and ability or interest in regular activities like climbing stairs or taking walks are clues that can help us diagnose pain.
Many pet owners visit our hospital out of concern that their pet may be in pain. Often when they are in the practice they comment that their pet acts perfectly fine at our office. Pets often mask pain in the doctor's office so our best source of information about pain comes from how your pets act at home. A few of the questions we may ask to help us identify pain include:
- Does your pet strain to get up when he/she first wakes up in the morning?
- Have you seen your dog limping during or after walks?
- Has your cat stopped jumping up to the sunny window to bask in the sun?
Your pet's comfort is a primary concern of our entire veterinary staff. Never hesitate to bring your pet in if you feel it is painful. New complimentary therapies are available to treat pain in your pet such as Therapeutic Laser treatments. Pain is inevitable. Suffering is not.
