February is Pet Dental Health Month!

Did you know that periodontal disease is the #1 problem veterinarians see in dogs and cats? According to the American Veterinary Dental Society (AVDS), 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats have periodontal disease by the age of THREE! Alarming isn't it! By far the most common illness we see on a daily basis is dental disease and the serious secondary effects of dental disease. By working together as a team, we can eliminate your pet's dental problems and prevent other life-threatening illness There are only a few things that we can have nearly complete control over in regard to our pet's health. One of those things is dental health, which is EXTREMELY important for our pets' overall wellness.
Identify if your pet is showing signs of dental disease

Xylitol Poisoning

Xylitol is used as a sweetener in many products, including gum, candy, baked goods and toothpaste. It can cause insulin release in most species, which can lead to liver failure. The increase in insulin leads to hypoglycemia (lowered sugar levels). Initial signs of toxicosis include vomiting, lethargy and loss of coordination. Signs can progress to recumbancy and seizures. Elevated liver enzymes and liver failure can be seen within a few days.
